Shortly after the launch of the Surface Laptop 3, in October 2019, a small number of users quickly started reporting cracks on the screen of the device. Although users alleged it wasn’t their fault, they had to paid out of pocket for the repair.

Since the number of cases increased, in February 2020, Microsoft began investigating, and now, the company confirms the problem, and it’s offering free repairs for affected devices.

According to the Surface support site (via ZDNet), the company has investigated the claims of screen cracking on Surface Laptop 3, and “have determined that, in a very small percentage of cases, a hard foreign particle may cause a hairline fracture in the glass that may seem to appear unexpectedly or without visible cause.”

If you believe your Surface Laptop 3 has this issue, you can contact Microsoft Support to start a repair free of charge during the warranty period of the device.

In the case that you have previously paid Microsoft to repair the screen of your Surface Laptop 3, you can also contact the company to get a reimbursement.
