Microsoft announced “dramatic” improvements to Outlook shared calendars on Wednesday.
Microsoft Outlook users will see improvements in the reliability and sync latency of shared calendars. Microsoft is describing the new improvements as “the biggest change to Outlook for Windows since its initial release in 1997.”
“This is one of those improvements that should be invisible because it eliminates issues but doesn’t change the core product functionality,” Microsoft wrote in a post announcing the improvements.
“Calendars will sync faster, and we have eliminated any reliability issues when managing a calendar. Delegates might only notice that things are smoother but no specific, obvious changes.”
Users can expect to see their meeting changes more immediately synced across members to avoid headaches of different people seeing different meeting versions on their Outlook calendar. Microsoft said some users had become frustrated with Outlook, since it could take up to a few minutes for a recipient to see changes reflected in their view of the shared calendar. Not exactly ideal for last-minute meeting changes.
While the improved experience has been available to those who use Outlook on the web, Outlook for Mac, and Outlook’s mobile app, Outlook for Windows is now enabled, as well.
Microsoft isn’t the only company to upgrade the way people plan their meetings. During last week’s Google I/O, Google announced a new experience in Google Workplace called Smart Canvas.

Smart Canvas is a collaboration tool within Google Workspace with various new features that work across Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Those features include the ability to present the Google doc, sheet, or slide you’re working on directly into a Google Meet call; live captions in five languages in Google Meet; connected checklists; emoji reactions; and more.
