LG plans to discontinue its LG Pay mobile payment service in November.
First reported by Droid Life, LG Pay has started to phase out its LG Pay digital wallet, with a shut-off date of November 1. As of Tuesday, users cannot purchase or add gift cards to LG Pay. And starting August 1, new users no longer will be accepted, and existing users won’t be able to register new credit cards.
“As we wind down over the coming months, you may notice that we will: stop accepting new enrollments to LG Pay; stop allowing the addition of new cards to existing accounts (Credit/Debit/Prepaid Card, Gift Card, Loyalty Card); and no longer allow the purchase of new gift cards,” LG’s support page confirms.
“However, you will be able to use your existing provisioned cards until the LG Pay service is completely decommissioned.”
LG added that the end of LG Pay wouldn’t affect any of the company’s other services and users’ accounts. However, the company does encourage users of LG Pay to use their remaining funds before November, as well as back up gift cards in their wallets for future use by saving the card number and pin outside of LG Pay.
LG Pay first was introduced in the G8 Thinq in 2018. The service never became very popular, and competitors like Google Pay, Samsung Pay, and Apply Pay were much more successful at establishing a digital wallet in their phones.
LG’s movement away from LG Pay makes sense, too. In April, the company announced it would stop making smartphones to instead focus on “electric vehicle components, connected devices, smart homes, robotics, artificial intelligence, and business-to-business solutions, as well as platforms and services.”
